•    Get your child’s foot measured in a shoe store.  Make sure there is room between the tip of the shoe and the tip of your child’s longest toe.  Make sure your child can wiggle his toes but not the rest of his foot.
•    Don’t buy bigger than your child’s foot.  Too big shoes can result in bad walking habits or injury.
•    Decide if you want shoes that Velcro on or have to be tied.  This is important with a younger child.  Your child may beg for tie shoes but do you want to have to tie them all the time?  If they insist, then insist that they learn how to tie their own shoes.
•    Make sure that the shoes offer ventilation so you don’t end up with sticky shoes.
•    Buy shoes that have a good tread.
