It's Halloween Time!

Halloween Safety Tips

It’s Halloween time!  Spooky music, candy, and holiday decorations all signal the start of Halloween season.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service want you and your family to be safe this Halloween.  Here are a few tips for a safe Halloween:

•    Wear comfortable shoes.  The sparkly plastic shoes or heels that came with a costume can cause blisters, a twisted ankle, or even a broken ankle.  Play it safe and wear comfortable shoes.
•    Be visible.  Wear light colored costumes.  Bring a flashlight.  Put reflective tape on costumes.  Have the kids carry a glow stick or wear flashing lights around their necks.
•    Stay in groups.  Do not trick or treat alone.  Never enter a stranger’s home.
•    Be careful with masks.  Make sure they fit properly.  If not, choose to use non-toxic face paint instead.
•    Make sure your costume is safe.  Do you have a tail or cape that is dragging on the ground and that can trip someone?  Check to see that all props such as knives, swords, and guns are flexible and won’t hurt anyone.
•    Inspect all candy before eating it.
•    Supervise children at all times.
•    Be careful crossing the street.  Double check for traffic.

Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service offers these tips to help keep safe and have fun this Halloween.

Smelly Shoes!

by Domenic Muto on 09/21/18

Keep Your Shoes Smelling Fresh

The calendar may say fall but it is still hot here in Florida.  All of these hot temperatures can lead to sweaty feet which lead to smelly shoes.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service offers these tips for stopping the stink:

•    First of all, avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row.  Let your shoes have a chance to air out.
•    Keep your feet clean and change your socks to cotton socks.
•    Consider using a foot powder on your feet to help combat the sweat.
•    To get the smell out of shoes, try baking soda.  Sprinkle the baking soda in the shoe and let it sit overnight.  Shake out the powder in the morning.  This method is best for sneakers or loafers.  This method can dry out leather shoes.
•    Baby powder can also be sprinkled in shoes to help absorb odor.
•    Put a few drops of essential oils on a cotton ball and leave in your shoes overnight.
•    You can freeze shoes to kill the bacteria in them.  Place your shoes in a sealed ziplock bag and place them in your freezer.  Take them out the next day and your shoes will smell better.
•    Use a shoe deodorizer spray.
•    If your shoes are washable, throw them in the washing machine.

These tips can help prevent foot odor and keep your shoes smelling sweet instead of sweaty.

Make your own story

Shoes have played iconic roles in movies.  These shoes leave impressions on you.  Who can forget Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the “Wizard of Oz” or Cinderella’s glass slippers from Cinderella?  Who didn’t covet Marty McFly’s self-tying power laces on his sneakers? Forrest Gump wore special shoes to help correct his spine along with sneakers that he wore to run across the country. In fact, Forrest states, “You can tell a lot about a person by their shoes – where they goin’, where they’ve been.”

Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service is here to help make your shoe story an impressive one.  If your shoes need repair, please visit us at 931 North State Road 434, Suite 1255, in Altamonte Springs.  We welcome all types of shoes, boots, orthopedic shoes, and athletic shoes.  We can repair or replace soles, tips, heels, stitching, and more.  We also offer shoe stretching and orthopedic shoe modifications.

While your shoes may tell a story, your luggage can help you create new stories.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service is an approved luggage repair shop.  We service brands such as Travel pro, Atlantic, Delsey, Victorinox (Swiss Army Luggage), Ricardo and Skyway, and Briggs and Riley.  We also service other manufacturers and luggage that is out of warranty.  We can repair or replace luggage wheels, luggage zippers, luggage zipper sliders, luggage feet, luggage carry handles, luggage retractable handles, and more.  Have questions?  Please call us at 407-869-7757.

Handbags, leather bags, and more can continue your storyline.  Keep these items in tip top shape by making sure that the zippers, straps, buckles, and straps are all working.  If not, please bring in your items to our location for repair.  We are open Monday through Friday from 8am until 6pm and on Saturday from 8am until 2pm.  We are closed on Sunday.

How To Purchase Shoes For School

by Domenic Muto on 07/30/18

Buying Shoes

School is just weeks away.  Whether your school-aged child is just starting school or heading off to college, they are going to need shoes.  Most schools, K-12, require shoes to be closed toe and have a strap in the back.  Quite a few schools also prohibit shoes that light up or have excessive decorations.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service offers these tips for purchasing shoes:

•    Get your child’s foot measured in a shoe store.  Make sure there is room between the tip of the shoe and the tip of your child’s longest toe.  Make sure your child can wiggle his toes but not the rest of his foot.
•    Don’t buy bigger than your child’s foot.  Too big shoes can result in bad walking habits or injury.
•    Decide if you want shoes that Velcro on or have to be tied.  This is important with a younger child.  Your child may beg for tie shoes but do you want to have to tie them all the time?  If they insist, then insist that they learn how to tie their own shoes.
•    Make sure that the shoes offer ventilation so you don’t end up with sticky shoes.
•    Buy shoes that have a good tread.

Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service offers the above tips for getting the right shoes for your child.

We have over 30 years’ experience in repairing shoes, bags, leather bags, and luggage.  All of our repairs are done on-site at our location at 931 North State Road 434, Suite 1255, in Altamonte Springs, Florida.  For those unable to get to our location, we offer a mail in repair service.  To utilize this service, simply visit online at http://www.floridashoeandluggagerepair.com/Mail-In-Your-Repairs.html.  Fill out the form, box up your repairs, and mail them to the address above.  Once we receive your items, we will call you to confirm receipt of the package and to obtain final payment.  We will then repair your items and mail them back to you.

We repair all types of men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes, boots, athletic shoes, and even orthopedic shoes.  We can repair or replace stitching, heels, tips, soles, and more.  We offer shoe stretching and orthopedic shoe modifications.

Types Of Travel Bags

by Domenic Muto on 06/18/18

Choosing A Travel Bag

Summer is here!  Traditionally, summer is a prime time for travel.  Families, solo adventurers, groups, and more travel for fun, pleasure, and business.  Before embarking on a trip, make sure you have the best travel bag for your needs.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service provides these ideas to keep in mind when choosing a travel bag:

•    How long will you be traveling?
•    What types of transportation will you be using? Plane, car, trains, cruise?
•    What types of travel will you doing? Camping, hotels, hostel, cruise?
•    What activities will you be doing? Swimming, hiking, diving?
•    What size travel bag will you need? Do you usually take short trips or long trips?  Are you an over-packer? Can you fit everything in a carry-on?

These questions can help guide you towards the perfect travel bag for your needs.

Here are the main types of travel bags:
•    A backpack.  This can be used for those who have an active travel lifestyle.  This allows you to pack your items and carry it all on your back.  Your hands are free and the weight is evenly distributed on both shoulders.  You also won’t have to haul luggage up steps.  However, this could put a strain on your back, be hot, or be too small for your travel needs.
•    A duffel bag.  This bag can carry items of varying sizes.  This is often used by sports enthusiasts who need to carry their equipment.  This is a flexible bag that can usually fit into an overhead compartment.  A rolling duffel bag is another option for those who want to push their bag instead of carrying it.  Duffel bags can put a strain on your shoulder, be too small for your needs, or be difficult to carry/wheel over rough terrain.
•    A rolling suitcase.  This is one of the most popular choices for travelers.  This bag comes in many sizes to meet the needs of all travelers.  You can purchase a rolling suitcase in carry-on size and bring it with you on a plane or you can purchase a rolling suitcase that is large and check it as baggage.  The rolling suitcase gives you the option of being able to pack more items while still having the ability to maneuver it easily because of the wheels.  Cons are that you may have to check your bag due to its size and rolling your suitcase over rough terrain or stairs can be difficult.
•    A travel tote or shoulder bag.  This item can be anything that works for you.  Examples are tote bags, messenger bags, purses, and more.  Many people use this item as their carry-on when traveling by plane.

Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service offers these suggestions for travel bags.

Before you travel this summer, make sure that your luggage is in tip top shape.  Jamestown Shoe and Luggage Service is an approved luggage repair shop.  We service Travel Pro, Atlantic, Delsey, Victorinox (Swiss Army Luggage), Ricardo, Skyway, Briggs and Riley.  We also service other manufactures and luggage that is out of warranty.  We can replace or repair luggage wheels, luggage zippers, zipper sliders, luggage feet, carry handles, retractable handles, and more!

We also repair bags, purses, briefcases, and leather bags for men and women.  If you are planning on using your tote for a carry on but it needs repair, then bring it to us.  We repair or replace zippers, stitching, straps, buckles, and more.

Of course, we also repair soles, tips, heels, and stitching on shoes.  We welcome all shoes, boots, orthopedic shoes, and athletic shoes.  We service men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes.  We also offer shoe stretching and orthopedic shoe modifications.

We are located at 931 North State Road 434, Suite 1255, in Altamonte Springs, Florida.  We are open Monday through Friday from 8am until 6pm and Saturday from 8am until 2pm.  We are closed on Sunday.  For any questions or more information, please call us at 407-869-7757.
